Dr. Sheets has been a licensed clinical psychologist for 16 years.

 

Clinical Experience

Dr. Heather Sheets, a licensed clinical psychologist with a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from an APA-approved program, has been practicing for 17 years. Her expertise includes individual therapy, as honed during her APA-approved doctoral internship at the University of Notre Dame.

After her internship, Dr. Sheets pursued formal post-doctoral training at Northwestern University, where she further developed her skills in short-term therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Upon licensure, she became the substance abuse coordinator at Northwestern University and later opened her private practice in downtown Chicago.     

Higher Education Experience

Dr. Sheets, a seasoned C-suite executive with 12 years of experience, has had a diverse career spanning higher education and nonprofit management. Her journey began as a Director of Clinical Training and faculty member in higher education. She later took on the role of Director of Training for the University’s APPIC member doctoral internship program, post-doctoral fellowship, and practicum programs.

Dr. Sheets honed her teaching skills, both in on-ground and online programs. She has taught in an APA-accredited Clinical PsyD program, Master’s in Counseling Psychology program, and the Master’s in Applied Psychology program, achieving the rank of Associate Faculty Member.

In her eight-year tenure as the Campus Dean in Washington, D.C., Dr. Sheets demonstrated exceptional leadership and expertise. She oversaw academic and operational alignment with the University’s annual goals and strategic plan, ensuring compliance with institutional (WSCUC) and programmatic accreditation bodies (APA, CACREP). Dr. Sheets effectively supervised and implemented policies and procedures across all functional units, continuously assessing their effectiveness for further improvement.

Beyond her administrative responsibilities, Dr. Sheets provided counsel and advice to students, faculty, and staff, fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment. Additionally, she managed the campus-level budget, overseeing both operational and academic affairs, and developed long-range plans for fiscal oversight of operational spending.

Community Involvement

Dr. Sheets’ early career was marked by various leadership roles. She served as Secretary/Treasurer for the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology, acting as the NCSPP liaison to the Association of State and Provincial Licensing Boards. Additionally, she was elected Secretary for the DC Psychological Association in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Sheets held the position of past President of the Association of Chicagoland Externship and Practicum Training, the largest independent training organization in the Midwest. She has also served on numerous grant governance and advisory boards.

Previously, Dr. Sheets served on the Illinois Psychological Association’s Internship Advisory Board and the California Counseling Center Board of Trustees. Her responsibilities included bylaw revision, member recruitment, fundraising, and advancement initiatives.

Personally Speaking

Dr. Sheets is a proud mom in a blended family of 5 kids, 2 dogs and a grumpy cat. She spends a lot of time on Arlington soccer fields, dance competition stages, and attempting to master a yoga handstand.
