Clinical Experience

Dr. Heather Sheets has been a licensed clinical psychologist for 16 years with a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from an APA approved education and training program. She completed an APA approved doctoral internship at the University of Notre Dame where she received a specialty in alcohol and substance assessment and treatment.

Following her internship, Dr. Sheets completed formal post-doctoral training at Northwestern University where she further developed expertise in short-term therapy, CBT, and narrative therapy. Once licensed, Dr. Sheets became the substance abuse coordinator at Northwestern University and opened her private practice in downtown Chicago.  

Higher Education Experience

For 12 years, Dr. Sheets worked as a C-suite executive for a regional nonprofit University. She started her career in higher education as a Director of Clinical Training and faculty member. Additionally, Dr. Sheets also served as the Director of Training for University’s APPIC member doctoral internship program, post-doctoral fellowship, and practicum programs.

Dr. Sheets has taught in both on-ground and online programs including the APA accredited Clinical PsyD program, the Masters in Counseling Psychology program and the Masters in Applied Psychology program and achieved the rank of an associate faculty member.

For 8 years, Dr. Sheets worked as the Campus Dean in Washington, D.C. where she provided academic and operational oversight of the campus’ alignment with the University’s annual goals and strategic plan, institutional (WSCUC) and programmatic accreditation bodies (APA, CACREP). Her duties also included supervision and implementation and observance of policy and procedures across all functional units while constantly assessing effectiveness for further calibration.

Dr. Sheets’ budgetary responsibilities include oversight of campus-level budget including both operations and academic affairs; long-range planning and fiscal oversight of operational spending. Administrative duties included counsel and advisement to students, faculty, and staff.

Community Involvement

Dr. Sheets’ early career afforded her various leadership roles. Previously, she served as Secretary/Treasurer for the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology. She also was the NCSPP liaison to the Association of State and Provincial Licensing Boards. She was elected Secretary for the DC Psychological Association in Washington, D.C.  

Dr. Sheets was the past President of the Association of Chicagoland Externship and Practicum Training, the largest independent training organization in the Midwest. Dr. Sheets has served on various grant governance boards and advisory boards.

She previously served on the Illinois Psychological Association’s Internship Advisory Board and the California Counseling Center Board of Trustees. She has worked on bylaw revision, member recruitment, fundraising and advancement issues.

Personally Speaking

Dr. Sheets is a proud mom in a blended family of 5 kids, 2 dogs and a grumpy cat. She spends a lot of time on Arlington soccer fields and attempting to master a yoga handstand.
